Over the 4th of July weekend, we decided to go with some friends to 4th of Juplaya — an informal gathering that happens in the expanse of the “playa” in the Black Rock Desert in Nevada. The playa (or a small portion of it) is the site for Burning Man. We’ve been going to Burning Man for a few years now, so it was nice to spend some time there in a different setting.

We had a great time in our camp. Highlights included great fireworks and Don’s 50th birthday party (half of Gerlach, it seems, turned out for potluck the BBQ dinner. We also drove around and visited other camps, and soaked in some nearby hotsprings. We had a great time.

The best part of the trip was visiting the Dismal camp to watch them burn a purpose-built Western town to the ground. This is kind of difficult to explain. I didn’t take any photos, but Jon has a great photoset on Flickr that documents the fiery demise of Dismal. I did take some photos of the mules that were “sent to the glue factory” the day before the burn.
